There's a moment at almost every live show I've played where someone comes up afterward and says something like, "I really loved that. How do I keep up with what you're doing?" 

That gap—between someone feeling something and having somewhere to go next—is what I think about a lot. And it turns out the tools that close it are simpler than you'd expect.

One of the most unglamorous but genuinely essential parts of show prep is making sure you're in tune before you ever hit the first chord. Not just at soundcheck, but reliably, repeatedly, under and real conditions. A clip-on tuner sounds like a small, insignificant thing, however, the difference between a confident stage presence and a distracted one often comes down to whether you're spending mental energy on intonation or on connecting with the room.
